Colby Covington secured one of the more important wins of his career Saturday when he emerged victorious from his UFC 272 grudge match with former friend and training partner Jorge Masvidal

The ugly, bitter feud between Covington (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) and Masvidal (35-16 MMA, 12-9 UFC) came to a head at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and after five rounds of relentless pace and pressure, “Chaos” was awarded a clear-cut unanimous decision by the judges.

Covington’s performance allowed him to successfully rebound from his second title-fight loss to Kamaru Usman in November and begin the path toward a potential third matchup. Even the biggest Covington supporters know that trilogy shouldn’t happen next, though, and it’s clear more wins are needed to make it a sellable fight.

So what does Covington do next? He made it clear he wants Dustin Poirier, but there seems to be a general lack of appeal in that pairing, and Poirier has already said he’ll never accept that fight.
